Five Questions - Do You Have Answers?
By Stephen H. Lahey

"I approach these questions unwillingly, as they are sore subjects, but no cure can be effected without touching upon and handling them."

- Titus Livius

Most CPG executives I know believe that retaining stronger marketing talent ultimately leads to getting better business results.

On the other hand, few of them have spent much time uncovering the wants, needs, or problems of the individuals on their marketing teams. If no one on your team has done this research, you can only guess what your people are really thinking these days.

With a talent war on, guessing can be dangerous. As a headhunter, I’ve seen that kind of gamble end badly for a number of companies.

In this increasingly active job market, it makes sense to assess your approach to retaining marketing talent. As you consider ways to improve retention, I encourage you to get detailed answers to five important questions:

1. What are the top wants and needs of our marketing staff?

2. How consistently are we meeting those wants and needs?

3. What can we do to increase their level of career satisfaction?

4. What are the problems that most trouble them, and how can we address them?

5. What is the difference between what we’re doing for our marketing team and what they feel we need to do to keep them happy?

I urge you to identify the gap between what you're doing now and what your people really require – and then act decisively to close that gap.

If you act now, you can stay one step ahead of your competitors. Don't wait. The stakes are too high.
