The Ones To Watch
By Stephen H. Lahey
Issue Eight: April 2006

"To attract powerful people, you must be powerful.
To attract committed people, you must be committed.
Instead of just going to work on them, go to work on yourself."

- Jim Rohn

I invite you to take a moment to consider some wise advice gleaned from someone who built a business empire. He knew that certain leadership principles, employed over time, can create a competitive edge that’s hard to beat. He knew a lot about attracting, inspiring, and retaining the right people.

The legendary retailer I’m referring to is Marshall Fields. Over the years Fields urged his management team never to forget these key ideas in all their dealings:

1. The value of time.

2. The success of perseverance.

3. The pleasure of working.

4. The dignity of simplicity.

5. The worth of character.

6. The power of kindness.

7. The influence of example.

8. The obligation of duty.

9. The wisdom of economy.

10. The virtue of patience.

11. The improvement of talent.

12. The joy of originating.

Simple ideas – yet each one is profound and powerful.

Can you imagine a marketing professional living out these values and not becoming a successful leader – not becoming a magnet for talented players? I can’t either.

The successful marketers I know are extremely intelligent, disciplined, and conscientious in their work. Then there are those who bring that same energy and focus to their personal development as well – and they inspire other people to do it too. Take it from a seasoned headhunter: They are always “the ones to watch” in the long run.
